What's happening in your local area?

Parkgate Shopping isn’t the only reason to visit Rotherham and South Yorkshire; God’s Own County has a rich and varied range of attractions. It’s not without good reason that Yorkshire was recently voted Europe’s Leading Destination at the World Travel Awards and was also named third-best region in the world for 2014 by Lonely Planet. No wonder that 40 million visitors come to Yorkshire each year for heritage-related tourism and Rotherham is not found wanting in any regard.

With full details of all local events, exhibitions, dining, and more, Yorkshire.com is the one-stop-shop for visitors and locals alike.

Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council website provides information on all the local council services and facilities, including country parks and leisure centres, and details of the exciting Rotherham Renaissance project which is giving the town a new lease of life.

In terms of built heritage, Rotherham Minster is a popular spot for visitors, described as ‘the finest perpendicular church in England’ by the Pevsner Architectural Guide. Nearby Roche Abbey boasts one of the most complete ground plans of any English Cistercian monastery, set in a valley lanscaped by ‘Capability’ Brown in the eighteenth century. After being closed to the public for over 60 years, Wentworth Woodhouse is now open to visitors with guided tours and seasonal events affording the opportunity to enjoy the largest privately owned house in Europe.

Home to local repertory societies and host to numerous well-known touring companies, Rotherham Civic Theatre has a packed programme all year round.

Familiy activities are plentiful. For a mind-blowing voyage of discovery, head to Magna Science Adventure Centre. Housed in a disused steel mill, the centre is packed with interactive exhibits and fascinating displays designed to explore the elements air, water, earth and fire. The Tropical Butterfly House is a wildlife and falconry centre offering daily animal encounters with parrots, meerkats, snakes, lizards and more. Be sure to be careful around the skunks…

Yorkshire is noted for its areas of natural beauty and Rotherham is perfectly located as a base for exploring the Yorkshire Dales and Peak District national parks. From hill-walking to climbing, mountain biking to caving, there are many outdoor activities to choose from. With a superb network of footpaths and routes for cyclists and horse riders through striking scenery, it’s the ideal way to enjoy life in the countryside.

We’re really keen to hear from individuals, groups or charities, so please let us know what you’re up to and we can help you share your story or promote your event. Please email BritishLandContentHub@thisiswhitewave.co.uk and we’ll do our best to feature your story on the website.
