The Tropical Butterfly House in Sheffield is home to more than just butterflies. The centre is a veritable hive of all things wild, furry, feathered, creepy, crawly, cute, and scaly.
Located in nearby Sheffield, the centre hosts a wide range of activities making it a great place to bring inquisitive kids for days out.
So what is there to do? The famous tropical butterfly house with its rainforest setting full of tropical flowers and lush vegetation is the place to start your visit. Here you can walk among free-flying butterflies and tropical birds that are native to Costa Rica and the Philippines. You will discover ducks, terrapins, and iguanas that are free to roam between ponds and steams, just like they would in their natural habitat.
Visitors are always in awe of the magnificent Darwin and Pedro, the tropical house resident Speckled Caimans.
Tiny and infinitely cute Marmoset monkeys can also been seen within their private indoor enclosure. The nocturnal room is home to some incredibly fascinating mini-beasts including chameleons, scorpions, beetles and snakes (to name just a few).
The next stop on your visit should be Meerkat Mansion. Described as luxury living for meerkats and porcupines, this is one of the more popular experiences on offer. In this purpose built enclosure you’ll see meerkats having fun and hanging out as they would in the wild. You even have the chance to feed them yourself, just speak to the Admissions Kiosk to find out how.
Lemur Heights is, you guessed it, home to the lemurs. This state of the art enclosure, opened in 2013 by Barry Chuckle, is home to Ring-tailed and Red Ruffed lemurs. Visitors can walk amongst these playful creatures during the daily Lemur Encounters.
We’ve mentioned only some of the centre’s highlights, but there is much more to discover including Otter Springs, Parrot Aviary, Birds of Prey Display, and the Owl Encounter. It is no wonder that visitors love to come back time and time again.
If you’re looking for an exciting and educational day out for the family visit the website for more information. Ticket prices start at £9.50 for adults and £8.50 for children. The family explorer passes are great value starting at £33 for two adults and two children.
