Students investigate past and present business at Parkgate

18 June 2012

Year 10 pupils from Wingfield Business and Enterprise College in North-West Rotherham took great interest in both the past and the present when they visited nearby Parkgate Shopping as part of their “Investigating Business” coursework project.

The group, led by their teacher Lisa Bradley, were looking at why businesses choose a particular location, and what factors they have to take into consideration. They were hoping to gain some first hand background on several economics issues covered in the syllabus. These included economies of scale, closeness to customers, closeness to suppliers, unemployment rates of an area, wage and salary levels of an area, historical reasons, and the nature of the local labour force.

“The discussions we had with the Parkgate management team and retailers gave them the insight that they were looking for, and they found the experience invaluable,” commented Lisa Bradley.

When Parkgate Manager, Denis Copeland, took them into the BHS store, their attention was drawn to a large photographic mural. Denis was then able to give them some historical background, and explain how and why the site of a former steel works has become a shopping park.
