Parkgate’s Fivers Help Rotherham Schools To Blossom

Parkgate Shopping is one of several Rotherham businesses that have joined a scheme to support the Borough’s children to develop important enterprise skills for the future.

The scheme has been launched by enterprise project Rotherham Ready, to bring school and businesses together. It works as follows. Parkgate provides a £150 loan to a class of eager pupils. Each pupil uses an initial investment of £5 each to launch their business within school, working individually or in groups. Pupils will decide what they sell, where they sell it and to whom, before checking the profits and presenting their final results.

This blossoming enterprise education project is being launched at Rotherham Town Hall on January 14. Investors will be invited to the final presentations, where certificates are awarded for the most successful businesses.

The result of this work could lead to bigger opportunities for schools, such as work placements within companies for teachers. This could give them the opportunity to feedback their knowledge into the classroom, integrating their learning into the curriculum and create strong links with local businesses.

Rotherham Ready is widely acknowledged as leading the way in enterprise education in the UK and is also attracting international interest. The programme is unique in that it targets children as young as four-years-old and provides the link between school and the real world of work, while encouraging business skills, confidence and creativity.
Project Officer, Catherine Brentnall said: “Rotherham Ready is so far ahead of other boroughs and it is making a positive difference to young people’s futures. In the long term, it will make the same difference to Rotherham’s economy.”

Billy Smith, Operations Manager of Parkgate Shopping, who will attend the launch, said: “We are very pleased to be involved in a scheme that could lead to a more prosperous Rotherham, and look forward to working with the pupils and helping them to understand some of the basic tools of business.”
